Years ago there used to be an arm of the volunteer group which was concerned with making visible an overarching storyline, they were the pilots who, as members of the Serpentis, stole one of the first Thanatos from the Gal Navy, leading to a chase across half the galaxy and quite a significant fight.
The odd little bits and pieces we get these days would, at the time, almost certainly have been accompanied by pilots in this group actually interacting with the player base. Alexander Noir might have been accompanied to his doom by player ships... heck, they might even have stopped his Nyx before it could hit the station. Anyone involved would have been part of a shared experience. When the Thukker fleet hit Yulai and Jita became 0.0 briefly there would have been actors in system playing the roles both of gankbears and hapless 4-4 freighter pilots, there would have been immumerable killmails from the time and yet more fakes attempting to pass themselves off as being from the time.
Then, the real story, which you might look for in missions (and can now start to find in the Epic Arc missions) was actually PvP based... Some might call it PvP-lite but...
Personally I wish that CCP hadn't disbanded it, they had their reasons but...
Regarding comments above about Sleeper AI to improve missions: The real strength of the Sleeper AI is how they react with other Sleepers, fitting in a Sleeper AI ship into a standard mission would have virtually no effect on the AFKness of missions (except perhaps with drones). What I would prefer to see is a significant reduction in the number of ships involved (reducing the lag at the same time) but bring them up at least close to player ship standards (NPC Ravens are only putting out 1 or 2 launchers worth of fire - fit the Obliterators with a full rack of torps and you wouldn't need more than one or two to keep people on their toes...) --
